Holidays Inspired by a Love of Literature
#1 The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Inspired Trip to Botswana
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith is the first book in a series that follows Mma Precious Ramotswe as she sets up her all-female private detective agency. A classic read for any traveller, this popular series inspired many people to visit Botswana and discover the places featured in the book.
The best way to explore Botswana is by car or safari, and you will find several tour agencies that provide group tours, day trips and other options. Among the activities offered are game drives which allow you to see Africa’s most fascinating animals in their natural habitats.
#2 Game of Thrones Inspired Croatia Trip
It is no secret that Croatia, and its coastal towns of Split and Dubrovnik, have played the part of King’s Landing in HBO’s smash-hit television series Game of Thrones. This breath-taking location is where George R.R Martin (the author of the books) found his inspiration for the series, and it is easy to see why.
The country boasts many historic cities and castles set against a warm Mediterranean backdrop—all perfect for exploring either at your own pace or via a Croatian private tour, creating memories that will last forever.
#3 Harry Potter Inspired Trip to Scotland
A trip to Hogwarts was always going to appear on this list, but where should you go? Many fans would fly straight to the beautiful island on Skye; others might choose Glencoe. However, we recommend Alfonso Bay in Scotland, the most enchanting location that is worth a visit.
It is situated on a small peninsula between two lochs, one freshwater and one a seawater loch. Its stunning views are visible from nearly every cottage. These natural wonders, combined with JK Rowling’s own breath-taking descriptions of the area, make a trip here even more magical.
#5 Eat, Pray, Love Inspired Trip to Italy
A holiday to Italy, along with car hire, is a must for any Eat Pray Love fan. Just think of all the places Elizabeth Gilbert visited in her journey, whether it was trekking through Bohemia or jumping on a gondola. You can also see Fiesole, which was where Gilbert spent her happiest moments in Italy. Then there’s Florence, where the main character finds her ‘sea of love’ and it’s easy to see why, the city is just so beautiful.
You can’t miss the delicious gelato when travelling in luxury around Italy. Gilbert’s favourite tip is Il Gelato di San Crispino, apparently home to the best ice cream in Rome and don’t forget to head to Naples for the world’s best pizza. Try Pizzeria da Michele, well known by both locals and Gilbert herself for the famous Neapolitan dish.
Also, try Lucca, where Elizabeth Gilbert enjoyed a hearty meal before travelling through Tuscany.
#5 The Lost City of Z Inspired Trip To The Amazon
Head deep into the heart of the Amazonian rainforest and uncover mysteries surrounding Percy Fawcett’s ill-fated quest to The Lost City of Z. This dreamlike location sets the scene for epic adventures, complete with awe-inspiring vistas and exciting wildlife.
Also, experience hidden waterfalls and spectacular panoramic views from mountains while passing through isolated villages. In addition, this is the opportunity to discover the secrets behind this great explorer’s disappearance while immersing yourself in South American culture. Try jungle trekking, canoeing down rivers, camping under the stars, and unforgettable wildlife experiences.
