How to stay safe while playing games online

When online you should always make sure you are protected and safe.

Playing your favourite games is something that should be enjoyed without worry. However, cybercriminals have the power to take away the fun and replace it with fear as they attempt to steal your data.

The world is filled with gamers with around two in five people being active online players in 2023. This means a large amount of the world’s population could be at risk of cybercrime.

Our guide looks at some dangers to watch out for and how you can be safer, ensuring less stress while enjoying your hobby.

What are the risks associated with playing online?

  • Being bullied
  • Getting scammed
  • Downloading malware or viruses
  • Having your identity stolen
  • Losing your account

What are the best methods for staying safe when I play online?

The risks above can significantly impact our financial and mental health, so taking the correct precautions is vital.

Use strong passwords

You’ll be asked to enter a password when setting up accounts so it’s important to pick one that’ll be hard to crack. According to Microsoft, a strong one consists of at least 12 characters, a combination of letters, numbers and symbols, and is different to others you use.

Set up two-factor authentication

Always enable multi-factor authentication if it’s offered. This provides an extra layer of security should someone guess your login details.

Once enabled, a code is sent via text, email or phone call, which needs to be entered to access your account.

Don’t include personal information in usernames

Putting personal information in a username can be a big mistake as this is visible to the public. If you have your name, birthday or other details on show, it can help people guess your passwords or security questions.

Staying safe online isn't just when on your laptop or phone, but you also need to think about your gaming consoles.

Only download games from legitimate sources

Games can be downloaded using official app stores or web pages. We recommend only using trusted sources like the Apple App Store whether you’re downloading a fun bingo app for passing time or an exciting role-playing game to get lost in. Applications available here should only come from reputable providers, so you can be confident they’re safe to use.

Keep software up to date

Up-to-date software should include robust security features, ensuring you have the best protection. If your phone, computer or console instructs you to download the latest patch, do it promptly.

Dispose of your device correctly

Getting rid of your device once it’s no longer in use may seem like a basic task, but it can lead to data breaches. This happens when you don’t delete your information before selling or scrapping it.

Resetting your equipment to factory settings is a simple way to remove all your details, so the next user doesn’t accidentally come across it.
