Gran Canaria is one of the larger islands within the Canary Islands archipelago. Thanks to its position just off the coast of Africa, it enjoys year-round sunshine, making it perfect for winter sun holidays. The island is best known for its numerous beach resorts and natural beauty.
The diverse landscapes include golden dunes, pristine beaches, lush forests, and dramatic ravines. For something different, head to its capital, where you can wander the charming streets looking up at the beautiful old stone houses, explore the vibrant markets, or walk along the delightful beachfront.
Finally, for adventure enthusiasts, there’s no shortage of things to do. You can hike up one of the many volcanic peaks, catch waves, or dive in the vibrant underwater reefs teeming with life.
Where is Gran Canaria located?
Gran Canaria, located in the Atlantic Ocean, is approximately 150 kilometres (just under 95 miles) off the northwest coast of Africa, making it closer to Morocco than to mainland Spain. It is part of the Canary Islands archipelago, which includes other popular islands such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.
If you travel from the UK, direct flights are available from all major UK airports, with a flight time of roughly 4 to 4.5 hours. However, as Gran Canaria is part of Spain, it is important to note that it belongs to the Schengen Area. Therefore, British citizens need a valid passport with at least six months of validity for entry. Additionally, keep in mind that travelling to any Canary Island will count against the 90 days allowed for travel within the Schengen Area without a visa.
The island follows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the same as the UK, and boasts a warm, sunny climate year-round. This makes it a popular destination, particularly for those seeking a winter sun getaway without a lengthy flight.
When is the best time to visit Gran Canaria?
Gran Canaria boasts over 320 days of sunshine annually and has a pleasant subtropical climate, making it a popular destination all year round. Therefore, the best time to visit really does depend on your preferences.
The peak season, from December to February, offers mild temperatures of 22–24°C, making it an attractive winter escape, especially for those looking to swap grey skies for sunny beaches.
The weather is warmer during the summer months of June to September, with temperatures around 26–28°C, ideal for sun seekers and water sports enthusiasts.
However, for those seeking the best value the shoulder seasons of March to May and October to November offer comfortable temperatures. There are also fewer crowds, and far more affordable accommodation. Whether you want a summer holiday or a winter sun retreat, Gran Canaria promises delightful weather no matter the season.
Getting to Gran Canaria
Getting to Gran Canaria is simple and convenient, thanks to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), located just 18 kilometres south of the capital, Las Palmas. The airport is well-connected, with frequent direct flights from major European cities, including London, Madrid, Berlin, and Paris.
Travellers from the UK can choose from popular carriers, including Jet2 who have flights from London Stansted to Gran Canaria several times a week, with flight times averaging 4–4.5 hours while travelling from mainland Spain takes around 2.5–3 hours.
Once you land, excellent transport links, including buses, taxis, and car rentals, ensure seamless travel to your chosen destination on the island.
For those looking to have all the hassle taken out of the booking process, consider booking your next trip including any holidays to Gran Canaria, with Jet2 Holidays. We travelled with them at the start of 2025 on a winter sunshine break and it could not have been easier. From the booking process, with included access to a personalised app, to the transfer system and the service received in resort everything was seamless.
Getting around the Island
Getting around Gran Canaria is easy and offers various transport options that suit all budgets and preferences.
The island’s public transport has a good bus network, known locally as “guaguas,” which provides extensive coverage connecting major towns, beaches, and tourist hotspots. A single trip typically costs between €1.40 and €5 depending on the distance, while tourist passes offer more affordable multi-day options.
If you choose a tourist pass, exploring the island is both easy and cost-effective. The most popular option is the BONO Guagua pass, which provides discounted fares for multiple journeys, can be loaded with credit, and costs around €15.
Another option is an unlimited travel card. This card offers unlimited rides for a set period of time—one day for €5 or three days for €12 and is ideal for travellers planning to visit several locations in a short time. These passes are available at bus terminals, kiosks, and tourist information centres.
Metered taxi services are readily available in all major towns and tourist areas and fares are reasonable, with a journey from the airport to Las Palmas costing approximately €35.
If you want greater flexibility, car rental is a popular choice. Most well-known companies operate from the airport, while local rental options are plentiful in resort areas. Prices start at around €25–€30 per day, and an international driver’s license is required. The island’s main roads are well-maintained, but drivers should exercise caution on winding mountain routes.
If you are staying in Meloneras, we recommend Omega Car Rental. It offers a great selection of cars at very reasonable prices, even at short notice. We recently hired a Fiat 500 Cabriolet for €45 for the day, including all insurance.

The Best Beaches in Gran Canaria
Maspalomas Beach
Maspalomas Beach, protected by UNESCO, stretches for 6km and offers a unique view of sand dunes and shoreline. You could be forgiven for thinking that you have landed in the Sahara desert when you look out over the dunes that go further than the eye can see.
![The sand dunes of Maspalomas beach in Gran Canaria](https://www.travellingbookjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/DSCF0015-scaled.jpg)
Sand dunes of Maspalomas
For those who prefer to remain active, even on the beach, waves here are often ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. For those who prefer something slightly different, consider taking a camel trek over the sand trails. There is also a lagoon here, which provides a habitat for rare plant and bird species.
If you want to avoid tan lines, Maspalomas Beach is also popular with nudists, and several beaches are set aside as “clothing optional.”
Las Canteras Beach
In the heart of the capital, Las Palmas, Las Canteras Beach may be an urban beach running along the front of a built-up city, but it will exceed all expectations. Here, you will find some of the best snorkelling spots on the island, as the shoreline offers a haven for underwater creatures, causing it to become a protected marine reserve.
However, for those who would prefer to remain on dry land, the beachfront promenade may be the place for you. With its extensive choice of cafes and bars, consider heading this way in the afternoon to enjoy good food while watching the street performers or an afternoon aperitivo when the sun sets.
Amadores Beach
Amadores Beach may be man-made, but it stands out with its imported white coral sand while the bay offers crystal-clear waters with gentle slopes, making it ideal for families.
There are many well-placed restaurants and facilities to complement the beach’s pristine conditions, creating a beautiful blend of natural beauty and modern convenience.
Puerto Rico Beach
Nestled in a sheltered bay, Puerto Rico Beach is an ideal water sports destination. Dramatic volcanic rock formations frame golden sands, while the enclosed cove creates consistently perfect water conditions.
If you would like to try some water sports, you will find several places where you can hire equipment and also receive training. This area attracts both novice and experienced water sports enthusiasts. This beach’s microclimate also ensures warm temperatures, making it a reliable spot for coastal activities.
San Agustín Beach
A windless haven offering a more authentic Gran Canaria experience, San Agustín Beach is a Blue Flag-certified beach away from heavy tourist traffic. Its protected conditions make it perfect for those seeking a quieter coastal retreat.
Güi Güi Beach
For those seeking somewhere off the beaten track, Güi Güi is an untouched beauty. To reach this beach, however, you will need to put on your hiking shoes because it is only accessible by foot. However, for those willing to put in the effort, the dramatic cliffs and pristine shoreline will leave you in awe when you reach this remote beach. This is one of the few locations that remains both raw and unspoiled.
Sardina del Norte Beach
Experienced diving enthusiasts probably already know about this pristine location. Sardina del Norte boasts exceptional underwater landscapes within a traditional fishing village setting. Its rocky cove provides a unique marine exploration opportunity beyond typical beach experiences.

Papas Arrugadas (Wrinkled Potatoes with Mojo Sauce)
Papas Arrugadas are small, salt-crusted potatoes boiled in seawater or heavily salted water until their skins wrinkle. They’re served with a duo of sauces: mojo rojo, a spicy red pepper sauce known as mojo rojo, and a herby, tangy sauce known as mojo verde, and can be found at many local eateries.

Taking your motorhome to Gran Canaria
Exploring Gran Canaria by motorhome allows you to travel at your own pace and see the island’s diverse landscapes, from the arid, desert-like dunes of the south to the lush green forests of the north.
Motorhoming in Gran Canaria offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and the joy of discovering the island’s hidden gems. The island has well-maintained campsites set within stunning scenery.
How to get to Gran Canaria in your motorhome
There are a couple of ways to travel to Gran Canaria with your motorhome. The most popular route is from Cadiz in mainland Spain, operated by Naviera Armas. This is a direct ferry to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and takes around 40 hours.
For a quicker option, you could ship your motorhome via ferry services from other Canary Islands like Tenerife or Lanzarote, which is becoming more popular with island-hoppers.
Alternatively, for those travelling from Europe on a longer road trip, you could drive through France and Spain and get a ferry across to Morocco. From there you can travel to Gran Canaria with your motorhome, though it’s a less conventional route. Ferry connections are available from ports such as Tarfaya or Agadir in Morocco to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands and are operated periodically by local ferry companies. Once on Fuerteventura, you can take another ferry to Gran Canaria, typically from Puerto del Rosario to Las Palmas.
